Tangerang, June 04, 2025 – Situ Bulakan Tomang, once a popular destination for community recreation, now lies quiet and neglected. The once-busy area that echoed with the sounds of local vendors, families, and children has grown still, now passed only by vehicles using the surrounding road. What caused this decline, and can the lake be brought back to life?
This natural lake once served as a treasured green space. On weekends, families would gather, children played by the water’s edge, and street vendors sold food in small wooden huts. Today, that vibrant atmosphere has vanished. No more trading activity. No more leisure seekers. Just silence.
Residents report that the decline has been ongoing for over a year. The road around the lake is still actively used as a shortcut due to its smooth surface, but the lake itself no longer attracts visitors. Its role as a recreational space has faded.
There used to be a lot of people sitting around, some eating in saung. Now it’s quiet, just a place for people to pass by,” said Budi, a resident of Tomang Villa, who lives nearby. I felt the same while being there—the atmosphere was silent, and the liveliness that once surrounded the lake seemed to have completely disappeared.
Today, the lake’s physical condition is concerning. Vendor stalls are gone, overgrown grass spreads unchecked, and there are no available public facilities like benches or lighting. The only visible activity is a few residents fishing quietly in the corners of the lake.
In its heyday, Situ Bulakan was more than a body of water. It was a local escape—calm, green, and welcoming. A place for reflection, family time, and fresh air. Its simplicity was its strength.
Unfortunately, a lack of maintenance, infrastructure, and official oversight has allowed this site to deteriorate. Without intervention, the lake risks being entirely forgotten—just another lost green space in a growing city.
Now, residents hope the local government will act. Some propose restoring the area into a public park or even transforming it into a local ecotourism spot. They believe the lake still holds great potential—if only it receives proper care.
For now, Situ Bulakan Tomang waits in silence. Whether it returns to life or remains a quiet memory depends on the choices made in the near future.
