Tangerang, July 08, 2025 –The main road in Periuk and the alternative road in Tomang are undergoing repairs simultaneously. This condition causes severe congestion at a number of strategic points and disrupts the daily activities of residents.

Traffic congestion in Tangerang Regency is getting worse, especially around Periuk and Tomang, two routes that serve as the lifelines of residents' mobility. Now, the community faces the bitter reality that the main Periuk road is being repaired, and so is the alternative route in Tomang. This situation creates extraordinary traffic jams, even during hours that were previously considered smooth. Residents are forced to find shortcuts through small alleys just to avoid severe congestion at the three-way intersection of Bayur, Periuk, and Taman Elang. However, in the end, the routes from these small alleys still lead to the same intersection, so traffic density cannot be completely avoided.
The main road in Periuk has suffered severe damage for a long time. Large potholes, peeling asphalt, and poor drainage cause flooding when it rains, adding to the traffic burden. The government has begun the road repair process, and activity at the location appears quite dense. Construction workers continue to carry out their duties amid road conditions that are still busy with vehicles. Work such as filling, concreting, and asphalt leveling is done gradually, while maintaining safety so as not to endanger road users. Their biggest challenge is working in conditions where the road remains active, with vehicles passing by without pause. However, compared to the progress of road repairs on the alternative Tomang route, the Periuk project is indeed progressing more slowly, and this has become a concern for residents.

Residents hoped that Tomang, which serves as an alternative route, could ease the burden. But the reality is different. Tomang Road is also being repaired, although the process is faster and more orderly. Mrs. Rika (45), a Tomang resident whose house is near the repair route, revealed, "It's being repaired, but it's fast. The contractor often works at night, so in the morning you can see the results. Residents here are also given information about when it will be closed, so they can arrange their route." According to information from local residents, the road repair project in Tomang is estimated to take only one month, much shorter than the project in Periuk. The difference in progress between the Tomang and Periuk projects has become a concern for residents, where repairs in Tomang feel faster while in Periuk they proceed more slowly.
The delay in the Periuk project makes residents increasingly frustrated. Mr. Jamal (41), an unofficial traffic controller in the Periuk area said, "I help direct traffic from morning to evening. But it's getting harder every day, and drivers are getting emotional. Many blame me too, even though I'm just helping." He also added that this project has been running for quite a long time, and it feels increasingly heavy because of the narrow and busy road conditions every day. His role is indeed important, because without this traffic controller, congestion could be more chaotic. However, the core problem is coordination and technical implementation that needs to be improved so that the project doesn't drag on.
Until the second week of July 2025, there has been no clarity from the Tangerang Regency Public Works Department. The community is increasingly impatient, especially small business owners, online motorcycle taxi drivers, and delivery workers who feel disadvantaged. Some road users even park their vehicles on the shoulder because they are tired of waiting, worsening traffic conditions.
The worst point of congestion is at the three-way intersection of Bayur Periuk with Taman Elang, which is the main route to industrial areas and also several schools in the surrounding area. The volume of heavy vehicles during rush hours makes long queues inevitable. Especially during school entry and dismissal times, traffic flow becomes very dense. Vehicles can be trapped for one to two hours just to travel short distances. Meanwhile, Tomang, despite being under repair, can still be passed with slight delays, because the road opening-closing system is implemented effectively.
One of the main causes of road damage in Periuk is heavy vehicle traffic that crosses this route every day. Large trucks from surrounding industrial areas make asphalt durability decline faster. Added to this, minimal regular maintenance and poor drainage systems accelerate damage. Without stronger structural design and vehicle restrictions, similar damage will likely continue to recur.
The short-term solution is to accelerate the road repair process in Periuk and organize traffic diversion routes that are clear and easy for the community to understand. For the long term, the government should build special lanes for heavy vehicles, perform routine road maintenance, and ensure that projects are carried out with open planning and professional teams. Cooperation between government agencies, project implementers, and local residents is also very important so that road repairs can run smoothly and be completed on time.
As the writer of this blog, and also a daily user of this road, I personally feel very disappointed and tired. This project has been going on for about 1 month and 15 days, but the progress feels very slow and hasn't shown significant results. I see for myself that before this major project started, the roads here were only patched up every time they were damaged, without comprehensive repairs. I hope the government doesn't just see this project as a physical task, but also as a social responsibility to residents. Infrastructure is not just about concrete and asphalt—but about comfort, safety, and the life time of the community that continues to be sacrificed every day.
